Current guideline status.
This edition of VDI 6023 Part 2 was published as a draft in August 2026. VDI states 31 October 2026 as the deadline for objections. This date is not a confirmed effective date for a final version.
This edition therefore does not establish an existing general obligation to equip every drinking water installation permanently with temperature loggers.
Why time series matter.
Section 10.3.6 covers checking temperature, pressure and flow rates as part of a hygienic and technical assessment. A single temperature reading provides only limited insight into circulation system dynamics.
To examine system-specific circulation time, the draft describes time-based measurement series: continuous temperature profiles over several days. These can capture and support professional assessment of heating phases, shutdowns and changing operating conditions, for example.
Several days – matched to the question.
The relevant section refers to several days, without defining one universally applicable number of hours or days. Duration, measurement points, resolution and the operating conditions to be captured must suit the system and the task.
The temperature at the central circulation return also does not describe every individual riser. The draft discusses additional measurements at representative or unfavourably located draw-off points. A logger on a single pipe does not replace that assessment.
The measurement plan matters.
A suitable logger is one component. Technical suitability comes from the combination of instrument, mounting, measurement point selection and evaluation. Externally mounted sensors measure the pipe surface; this temperature must not simply be treated as water temperature.
- Define measurement points and thermal contact in a traceable way.
- Choose a measurement interval and time reference that suit system dynamics.
- Check and document indication accuracy; calibration documentation can help.
- Offline-Speicher und rechtzeitige Synchronisierung berücksichtigen.
- Have the measurement data evaluated by the responsible expert.
Our approach: Data Backfill and our own pipe mount.
SmartSensio offers compact temperature loggers with Data Backfill for traceable temperature histories. Readings can be stored locally when disconnected and backfilled to the cloud through a Cloud Connector later. Our own pipe mount complements the sensor for positioning on pipes.
This does not amount to a blanket guarantee of compliance or suitability for every assessment under VDI 6023. Include the measurement objective, duration and pipe mounting details when requesting this combination.
